Beyond Barriers: The Power of Philanthropy in Building Sustainable Livelihoods

Dr. Prahalathan KK, Co-founder – Bhumi NGO, shares inspiring stories of Mirakline and Monica, two extraordinary girls weaving threads of resilience and triumph, through Bhumi NGO’s Bring Smiles Scholarships Program. Their journeys go beyond the ordinary, showcasing the profound impact of philanthropy on sustainable livelihoods. Discover how personal connections and unwavering support create a ripple effect, breaking the cycle of poverty.

As one of the founders of Bhumi, I’ve seen firsthand how impact philanthropy can change lives. Philanthropy is important for driving projects that help create sustainable livelihoods. It’s a powerful catalyst for societal evolution. Our Bring Smiles Scholarships (BSS) Program is a great example of how targeted philanthropic efforts can create lasting positive change. BSS provides full scholarships to students from underserved communities. Thanks to the generosity of our long-time donors, the program has sponsored the education of over 10,000 students in the last 10 years. This has allowed them to break out of intergenerational cycles of poverty.

I want to share the stories of Mirakline and Monica, two early recipients of this scholarship. Their stories are really close to my heart.

Mirakline’s tale begins in the heart of Chennai, from a household grappling with economic hardships. She joined our scholarship program in sixth grade and continued for ten years.

During Mirakline’s 10th Board Examinations in 2018, her father, who was her source of support, passed away from jaundice. Despite the challenging times, Mirakline passed her Boards with good grades. The pandemic was extremely stressful for the family. Her mother, the sole breadwinner, could not work due to the lockdown. The support provided by the scholarship program bolstered her spirit, especially through the pandemic, and shaped her into a first-generation graduate. She mentions that it was only due to Bhumi’s continued support that she could make it to college. In 2023, Mirakline is the first person in her commune to have secured a white-collar job.

Central to Mirakline’s success was the unwavering support she received from a volunteer turned donor. The volunteer who learned about the ground realities of children h at Bhumi became deeply committed to building a future where every child – regardless of their socio-economic background- can realize their fullest potential.

Monica, another champion scholar of our program, embarked on her journey with the scholarship in the 4th grade in 2014. A dedicated student, supported by our long-term donors, has also found passion outside the classroom as a talented carrom player. In India, where over 62% of our children drop out of school due to socio-economical challenges, getting to pursue your co-curricular interests is an elusive dream. Monica’s family shares that they could only support their daughter’s passion because of the continued financial assistance to meet her academic expenses through the BSS Program. In 2023, Monica’s prowess in Carrom manifested on a national stage when she secured the first prize at the Carrom Nationals in Shimla along with her teammates.

The narratives of Mirakline and Monica echo far beyond the boundaries of their individual journeys. They serve as beacons, guiding lights in a sea of potential, illustrating the profound impact that philanthropy can have on the creation of sustainable livelihoods. Their stories emphasize that philanthropy is not merely a transaction but a continuous, evolving commitment that shapes destinies. At Bring Smiles – Bhumi, the cycle of poverty, which often perpetuates through generations, is continuously disrupted by the generosity of those who believe in the transformative power of giving.

The ripple effect of such initiatives is immeasurable, creating a domino effect of positive change and shaping resilient individuals who, in turn, contribute to the betterment of society. During her final year of undergraduation, Mirakline volunteered with the Scholarship Program, taking the torch forward – much like the volunteer who had her back for a decade. Monica aspires to secure a job and reunite with Bhumi as a donor to support more children like her in the next five years.

Let the stories of the girls resound as a clarion call. As a community united by a shared vision, let us continue to empower our children to cultivate dreams, nurture talents, and become architects of their destinies.
