Bhumi Fellow Speaks – Stories from Alma Mater: A Journey with Monika Thangavelu
From the city of Chennai, where dreams and traditions blend seamlessly, Monika Thangavelu, a Bhumi Fellowship alumna from the 2020-2022 cohort, her journey is a vivid tapestry of passion, curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to societal impact.
Born in Erode, Tamil Nadu, Monika’s life has been a series of explorations, each experience shaping her into the dynamic individual she is today.
Monika’s educational journey began in law, a field she chose with a strong desire to give back to society. After completing her undergraduate degree in law, Monika felt there was something more she needed to explore. This led her to pursue a Master’s in Human Rights Law from Essex in the UK. However, just as she was about to step into the world of human rights law, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, altering her plans and bringing her back to India. It was during this transitional phase that Monika found the Bhumi Fellowship, a program that would allow her to work on the ground with children, making a direct impact on their lives and the education system.
Monika’s time as a Bhumi Fellow was transformative, both professionally and personally. Assigned to a school, she took on the challenge of fostering holistic growth in children, focusing on not just academics but also the physical and emotional well-being of her students. One of her most impactful initiatives was a comprehensive physical well-being event, which involved children and their parents in a series of activities designed to promote healthier lifestyles. From cooking competitions to nutritional counseling, Monika’s efforts touched every aspect of her students’ lives, ensuring that they and their families were well-equipped to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
But there’s much more to Monika than her professional achievements. In her leisure time, Monika is an avid explorer of life’s many facets. Her hobbies have evolved over the years, reflecting her diverse interests. As a child, she could be found playing cricket with friends, swimming in wells, or dancing her heart out. Dance remains a constant in her life, a form of expression that brings her joy and tranquility. Trained in Bharatanatyam for eight years, Monika later explored other dance forms like hip-hop and Zumba, always eager to learn and embrace new experiences.
Monika’s love for exploration extends to her culinary adventures as well. She has a penchant for trying out quirky food combinations, the most memorable being an unusual mix of lady’s finger with sweet corn – a dish born out of necessity but enjoyed for its unique taste. This curiosity about food doesn’t stop at tasting; Monika delves into the history and ingredients of the dishes she tries, making every meal a learning experience.
Currently, Monika works with SPI Edge, a startup that supports purpose-driven entrepreneurs. Her role involves helping social and cultural entrepreneurs create a more significant impact through their ventures. This position allows her to blend her passion for social impact with her growing interest in entrepreneurship, paving the way for her future aspirations.
Monika’s journey from law school in the UK to the classrooms of Chennai, and now to the entrepreneurial world showcases her adaptability, resilience, and drive to make a difference. Her time with the Bhumi Fellowship has been instrumental in shaping her professional path, equipping her with the skills and mindset necessary to navigate complex social challenges.
As she continues to explore new horizons, Monika remains grounded in the values she holds dear – curiosity, empathy, and a commitment to making the world a better place. Whether she’s dancing, trying out a new recipe, or mentoring young entrepreneurs, Monika brings her full self to everything she does, inspiring those around her with her enthusiasm and dedication.
Monika Thangavelu is a refreshing reminder of the power of being a lifelong learner, unafraid to explore, experiment, and evolve. Her story is not just one of personal growth but also a powerful example of how education, when combined with passion and purpose, can create ripples of positive change in society.
