Journey of Anusha Vishwanath: From an IT Professional to Bhumi ChangeDriver
Anusha Vishwanath, Manager of Bring Smiles Scholarship Program and the Executive Assistant to Bhumi’s Co-founder, has an extraordinary journey that has seen her transition from a career in IT to making significant impacts in the social sector. Her story is an indication of resilience, adaptability, and the drive to create meaningful change.
Anusha’s story begins in Hyderabad, the city of her heritage, though she was born in Chennai. Her quest for knowledge and growth led her from her birthplace to Pune, where she pursued her post-graduation. Education was not just a phase for Anusha; it was the cornerstone of her values and ambitions.
The journey, however, was not without its hurdles. Faced with financial constraints, Anusha took out an education loan. Her family stood by her side, especially her father, who deeply believed in the power of education and the importance of helping others achieve it. His unwavering support became the backbone of Anusha’s educational pursuits, and this familial encouragement fortified her resolve to succeed and to pay it forward.
Her career began in the IT sector, where she worked in Bangalore. During this time, she briefly volunteered for CRY – an experience that cemented her decision to pay it forward. However, life took a turn when she had her first child, leading her to a sabbatical from her full-time job. The next eight years were dedicated to her family, a period that saw her move to Dubai and then back to Chennai in 2019.
Anusha’s return to Chennai reignited her desire to contribute to society. She initially volunteered with Agaram Foundation but faced challenges in balancing the timing of volunteer activities with her family responsibilities. A conversation with a friend led her to Bhumi, where she started as a volunteer with Bhumi’s HELO program. Her role involved creating content and story videos in Tamil, focusing on Social Emotional Learning (SEL).
Her dedication and passion for the cause soon became evident. She loved the energy and ethos of the Bhumi team and found herself drawn to the possibility of a full-time role. Despite her lack of a formal degree in the social sector, she applied for and secured the position of Executive Assistant, a role that allowed her to learn and grow within the organization.
Over three years later, Anusha has thrived at Bhumi. She has been instrumental in various projects and has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education. One project that stands out for her is the Bhumi Fellowship Program. She believes that by empowering government schools, Bhumi can create long-term, sustainable change that will benefit countless children.
Outside of her professional life, Anusha embraces a world filled with reading, crocheting, and outdoor pursuits such as hiking. Her adventurous spirit shines through in her daring attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, a formidable yet rewarding challenge that pushed her beyond her limits.
A particular book, “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch, holds a special place in her heart. Its themes of education and perseverance resonate deeply with her, echoing her own beliefs. This inspiration from Pausch’s words is evident in both her personal and professional life, where Anusha is constantly on a quest for knowledge and self-improvement.
For Anusha, Bhumi represents an opportunity to make a difference. It’s a place where she can contribute to the well-being and growth of children, ensuring they have the environment and resources to thrive. Her ultimate goal is to see government schools become so exemplary that they are the first choice for parents.
