From the bustling streets of Bangalore to the quiet corners of classrooms of Tamil Nadu, Anjali Sarmah – a Bhumi Fellow alumnus from Cohort 2020-22 and now, the Programme Manager of Bhumi Fellowship program.
Her story is both inspiring and invigorating, filled with adventures, challenges, and a relentless drive to make a difference.
From Architecture to Education
Anjali’s path to Bhumi was far from linear. With a degree in architecture, she initially found herself in Nashik, working in a field she soon realized wasn’t her true calling where the dissatisfaction, coupled with the introspective period during the COVID-19 lockdown, led Anjali to re-evaluate her career goals. “I realized that I was very privileged, and there were many who didn’t have the opportunities I had. That realization sparked my interest in the development sector.”
Thus began Anjali’s journey with the Bhumi Fellowship, a decision that would profoundly shape her professional and personal life. Despite her initial unfamiliarity with Chennai, she embraced the fellowship, eager to learn and contribute.
Passion for Learning and Growth
Anjali’s tenure as a Bhumi Fellow was a whirlwind of learning and growth. “The fellowship was an extremely steep learning curve, whether it was about myself, the education system, or working with people in general” she reflects. Despite the challenges posed by the predominantly online nature of her cohort’s experience, Anjali found joy in contributing to the evolving structure of the fellowship. “It’s like a startup; we contributed a lot to how the fellowship currently functions.”
Her role extended beyond the fellowship, as she transitioned into a full-time position with Bhumi, becoming the Programme Manager. In this capacity, Anjali manages the current fellows and plays a pivotal role in various programmatic aspects, from planning learning journeys for new cohorts to integrating innovative educational practices.
A Life Beyond Work
When she’s not immersed in her work, Anjali is an avid traveler. “I love traveling, exploring new places, and trying different cuisines,” she shares. Her passion for travel is matched by her love for art and history, often finding solace and inspiration in museums and historical sites. Anjali’s adventurous spirit is evident in her travel stories, like the time she nearly found herself stranded in a foreign country without money, relying on the kindness of friends to navigate the situation.
Grooving to music and cooking are other of Anjali’s cherished hobbies. “I love cooking and eating different types of food. I rarely go to the same place twice; I like trying new things.” This culinary curiosity mirrors her approach to life, always exploring, always learning.
